Gory tales go down a treat

Gruesome true tales of beauty products made from mouse fur and earthworms had children at Stradbroke Primary Academy enthralled as a historical fiction author visited the school.
Julia Edwards, author of the Scar Gatherer series of time-travelling adventure stories, thrilled children from Year 3 to 6 with a horrible history lesson on Tuesday, February 5.
She shared fascinating facts about the eras her books are set in, from the disgusting truth about Roman toilets to Tudor ladies’ stomach-churning make-up secrets – like removing their eyebrows with a potion containing white wine and ground earthworms, and replacing them with fake eyebrows made from mouse fur.
Teacher Charlotte Adams said: “The children loved it and found out lots of interesting facts about different times in history.”
